Valor, Heritage and Courage: Keith Wells in spirit of “Give Me Fifty Marines Not Afraid to Die”
Books
The book was written by Lieutenant Wells, who was 23 years old, and was well-liked by his enlisted men because of his tendency to socialize with them. He also liked to have dramatic conversations on the art of battle. When he was handed command of the 3rd platoon at Camp Pendleton, he addressed the group with a determined look on his face and a raised fist, declaring, “Give me fifty Marines who are not afraid to die and I can take any position”. Uncertain about how to react to their new Lieutenant or his courageous declaration, a few of his marines privately voiced their concerns. The well-received 1995 novel “Iwo Jima, Give me Fifty Marines Not Afraid to Die” by Lt. Wells adopted this statement as its subtitle.

This also considers the personality that possesses the qualities of bravery, tenacity, and resilience, much like the renowned Second Lieutenant John K. (Keith) Wells USMC along with his 3rd Platoon. During one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, Lt. Wells and his troops persevered in their training, defied overwhelming odds, and showed unmatched bravery. Similar to this, Wells’ platoon have consistently exhibited “uncommon valor” in the face of hardship, making it a shared virtue that characterizes our country.

We honor the potential and inspirational spirit of Marines on the Island of Iwo Jima, where bravery and tradition collide. Where the ghosts of our past inform our present and future, just as Lt.
